The major search engines have announced an update to the sitemaps.org protocol which enables site owners to store their XML Sitemap files in any location -- even on a different domain than the one referenced in the Sitemap. This will be a welcome change for those who manage multiple domains and would like to keep all Sitemap files in one place, as well as for those who would like to store their Sitemap in a location other than the root.With the latest sitemaps.org update: Each Sitemap file can reference only one domain;The Sitemap can be placed anywhere (on a different domain or in a subfolder) as long as its location is referenced in the domain's robots.txt file.

New York—A new study by the Association of National Advertisers and Forrester Research found that 62% of marketers believe TV advertising has become less effective over the past two years.

It also found that 87% of marketers plan to spend more on Web advertising this year than last year.

PaidContent.org reported on Google's recent 10-K filing with the SEC this past Friday. PaidContent summarized some of the key details in that filing.

• Google's full time staff grew about 57% from 2006 to 2007. On December 31, 2006 Google had 10,674 full-time staffers and on December 31, 2007 Google had 16,805 full-time staffers.
• Google continues to derive 99% of its revenue from advertising. PaidContent summarizes, "Advertising revenues made up 99% of our revenues in 2005, 2006 and 2007."
• Google's international revenues have grown as a percentage of their total revenues to 48% in 2007 from 43% in 2006.
• Paid clicks on the Google network and members' web sites grew about "43% from the year ended 2006 to the year ended 2007."

Having earlier told Microsoft no, now Yahoo has explained to its shareholders why it declined to be purchased. Below, some highlights.

• Yahoo's board is "continuously evaluating all of Yahoo!'s strategic options" 
• Yahoo is has a "unique combination of strengths," including a strong brand, many popular online services, a leader in display advertising, a leader in search advertising, mobile and online video. 
• Yahoo plans to grow key properties by 15 percent per year, over the next several years.
• Yahoo is working to make itself a "must buy" for advertisers.

Microsoft has acquired Danger, Inc., maker of the T-mobile "Sidekick" device and the Danger operating system and platform. Danger has been hailed as highly innovative and its platform and OS pre-dates the iPhone (the company was founded in 2000). Microsoft believes that Danger and its OS can offer an improved mobile development platform and consumer experiences in the increasingly competitive mobile market. And Microsoft has the assets and relationships to bring Danger's core capabilities to a broader audience.
